Posted 13 February 2022: 1952 Football Program (West Hi vs. Purcell) has been solved "Thanks" to below note from Glenn Streibig (Class of 1951): ...R. Lack is Robert Lack (Bobby) Class of 1955 and a TO. He is the younger brother of Larry Lack of the Class of 1950 and also a TO. In addition I noticed R. Lutz on the program. I believe this is Ronnie Lutz of the Class of 1953. He also is a TO and the younger brother of Joe Lutz, Class of 1951 and Louie Lutz, Class of 1952, both were TO's. Hope this helps you...Glenn Streibig...
Posted 11 February 2022: Came across an original 1952 Football Program (West Hi vs. Purcell). From the best I could tell so far, the only T.O. on the Roster was listed as Lack B. (Bob ?) Thinking it is a mistake, and is actually Lack R. (Robert), Class of 1953. He was listed as Number 39, and came across a picture of a Number 39 and had him listed as "Lark". Anyway, it is attached and if anyone can verify that it is Robert Lack, please let us know via the Contact Tab and we'll get it labeled correctly. Her "DNA" most definately was passed on through my siblings and myself; growing up in a house with 🎶 24/7 !!! She knew all the tunes; classical, broadway, rock, jazz etc. etc... she had us singing harmonies @ the house before we knew what the word even meant!!!

Posted 10 May 2019: [PRESS RELEASE] WEST HIGH SORORITY AND FRATERNITY ALUMNI INVITED TO ANNUAL PICNIC
“The search continues to locate alumni of Western Hills High School who joined a sorority or fraternity and to cordially extend an invitation to the annual picnic. It’s such a fun event,” said event coordinator Cindy Sander, a 1970’s grad and member of Tau Sigma Chi sorority. “Unlike class reunions, this event is open to all West High sorority and fraternity alumni from any year, any fraternity or any sorority; not just one graduating class. That is a big part of what makes this event unique,” she added.
But the focus of the annual picnic is to reconnect with old friends while making new ones. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos, memorabilia, and stories about those nostalgic times.
The 2019 West High Sorority & Fraternity Alumni Picnic will take place, rain or shine, on Sunday, May 19, 2019, from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m., at Fernbank Park's Riverview Shelter House, 50 Thornton Avenue, (off Route 50) in Sayler Park. Bring a guest, BYO drinks (alcohol permitted) and a dish to share, if you wish. Brats, Mett’s and Hot Dogs are free. If you prefer other grill-ready items, bring something; grills and charcoal are provided. Split-the-Pot and Door Prize raffle tickets are offered throughout the day, and group photos begin at 3:00 p.m.
"We never know who will show up and encourage those who are in contact with former members to extend our invitation and encourage them to be our guest. Last year, alumni from Iowa, Florida and Michigan traveled back to Cincinnati and spend the day with us,” Sander said.
For additional information, to share contact information of former members or to connect with old friends, join the group page on Facebook entitled "West High Sorority & Fraternity Alumni" or, send an email to the event coordinator at [email protected].

Posted 17 September 2018: Fratres, Here's a brief review of this year's Outing.
- 37 fratres attended this event, held Monday at Hidden Valley C. C.
- Of that number, 20 played golf. (While the course was wet, all players indicated it was a fun time.)
- From 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, our Happy Hour flowed as always giving everyone the opportunity to visit , share and reminisce with OLD, friends. (LOL)
- The group discussed future Gatherings before dinner.
- Options for next year under consideration included: Keeping our current twice a year get-together's, including golf, OR going to a ONCE a year gathering, on a Autumn Saturday, with or without golf.
- These and other options will be discussed at length over the winter.
- Any & ALL suggestions will be considered.
- Please feel free to share.
- Attendance continues to be a concern. My sincere thanks to the fratres to attended this event .
- T. Information on our fall gathering, November 24 will be forthcoming.
- All the best, Ken Kay, Bob Harper and the planning committee

Posted (With Permission) 15 August 2018: (Note from John "Snake" Custer, Class of 1963); "Ken, I hope the event will continue, and even though I have never attended, I still hope to attend someday. I belong to a few groups that have dwindling attendance and it is usually not lack of interest but just that time catches up to some. I say keep going till no one shows up! Texas is a long way and I am still very active in my business so don't get to Cincinnati as much as I would like but hope to make one of these soon. I appreciate your focus and support for TO so that the wonderful experiences we all share will not be lost.Warm Regards,JC"
Posted (With Permission) 9 August 2018: (Note from Bill Wittekind, Class of 1969); "I attended in 2016 hoping to see many from the classes of ,'67, '68, and '69. I flew in from Florida. I was very disappointed that so many locals didn't show. I enjoyed the outing but won't travel that far for the event again. Bill Wittekind, class of '69"
Posted (With Permission) 9 August 2018: (Note from Glenn Streibig, Class of 1951); "Ken, Thanks for the invitation. I am sorry to say that I will not be attending the outing on the 10th. As you know I live in St. Louis and our annual trip home to Cincinnati this year is scheduled for September 18, the date for West Hi's annual reunion for the classes of '49, '50, '51 and '52. Unfortunately as years go by our group is growing smaller. I was really shocked by the sudden death of my long time friend and buddy, Bob Berger, earlier this year. Our West Hi reunion group has also dropped off drasticly in the last two years. As it stands now, I doubt we will be returning to Cincinnati many more times in the future. All of our Cincinnati family and most of our Cincy friends are not with us anymore. I appreciate the good work you and others have done to keep the spirit and memory of our great fraternity alive for so many years. Thanks to all. I will always cherish the "Iron Men" award that was bestowed on our foursome a few years ago. Have a great outing on the 10th. Please pass on my greetings to the brothers. I will be thinking of you...Glenn Streibig, West Hi '51"
Posted (With Permission) 9 August 2018: (Note from Dave Durrant, Class of 1963); "Ken- Hi! Always appreciate hearing from you. Settling in San Antonio after the end of our USAF career and with no family in Cincinnati, the chances of coming to one of the T.O. annual outings is pretty remote. That said, my two cents worth is that it is a good thing you are doing "to bring the boys together to celebrate the day our dear TO was founded". Being a TO was the highlight of my 2 years of high school at Western Hills and I do remember your prevailing on my behalf with Pea Battaglia in extending my time to memorize 50 lines of the Merchant of Venice so I could pledge. Still remember the damn things! Hope the outing is a huge success! Fraternally, Dave Durrant 1963"

Fratres,
As those who attended, will testify, The Annual Outing was a huge success. A beautiful day greeted our golfing brothers. As you may know, green fee is $40. AND, those who played are given a free round. $40. for 36 holes--- Not bad !
As always, the buffet was simply delicious, with the fried chicken and roast beef leading the way.
The best part of all was the opportunity to visit with old and dear friends. It is great to see fratres from the 1940s & 50s trading stories with the 60s & 70s brothers. That is what these get together's are all about.
Our next event will be the Fall Gathering at Harvest Home Park, November 25, 2017. Take good care & see you then.
The planning committee.

- Our place in Punta Gorda is all good. Boat stayed on lift. Hope everyone else is good as well. We evacuated to Atlanta. Will try to head back tomorrow. Jeff Griffith (Class of 1965)
- Just got power back! Lost a lot of trees and there’s furniture in the swimming pool, but we’re fine. Maybe TOs are indestructible? Bart Varelmann (Chapter 1, Class of 1947).
- All is good in Jacksonville. But I'm about wore out from running my chain saws! Bill Wittekind (Class of 1969)
- Thanks for the update. I was planning to attend golf outing dinner, but had to return to Bonita Springs to get storm shutters, etc., up. Good thing as our community got slammed. Multi millions of dollars damage and no power for a week. Highest water levels in many years (ever) ? The power outage scares the crap out of me in light of the terrorist or foreign enemies" threats to take down our power grids. No food, no gas, no clean water. Chaos and riots would ensue. Posted 25 September 2916: Here is a T.O. mystery item, for anyone who may be up to trying to solve this mystery. In the T.O. Constitution, the following reference was made: "Shortly thereafter, in 1895 or early 1896, the first officers of the fraternity were nominated and elected. The first Rex Regum elected at that time was expelled from the fraternity shortly after taking office for consorting with T.O.'s arch rivals, D.B., and his name was removed forever from the fraternity records and will remain so in the future." So, a couple mysteries here; One, who was the T.O.:? and, we may never know due his name being removed forever from the fraternity records, and two; who or what was D.B? We may never know either, but perhaps the answer lies out there somewhere. If anyone finds out anything regarding this mystery, please let us know via the Contact Link. Posted 1 August 2016: Exciting news! Received the following from the daughter of Gary Nagorka.
"My father, Gary Nagorka (1960 Freshman Picture attached), was a proud member of Triginta Optimi. He was quite a talented story teller and growing up I heard many stories of his life's adventures. He always spoke with deep fondness of his T.O. days. Recently, I was sitting in his office and saw the Triginta Optimi crest displayed on the wall. I wanted to write and inform you that on January 30, 2016, my father, Gary Nagorka, passed peacefully from this world to be with his Lord and Savior. The memories he shared with me of his Triginti Optimi brotherhood are now cherished fondly in my own memories, as stories of his youthful adventures full of vim and vigor. With Love and Blessings, Tesia Nagorka"
This is another instance of the Cooley High School T.O. Chapter that we have been trying to find more information about. Earlier on 16 September 2014, we received information from James (Jim) Madsen who also stated he belonged to this Chapter. (More to follow as it becomes available.)

Posted 1 May 2015: (A note from Lucinda Sander): Keeping my fingers crossed. Jackie Schnitker called today to thank us for the comments and photos I printed and shared with her from this site. Great news, she and her friend, Fran Tebbs Meyers, also age 91,.and a former member of PIDEL are considering coming to the picnic. They wanted to warn me that some days are better than others, and they may not be able to confirm their attendance until a day or so in advance. I understand, and pray they are feeling fantastic when May 17 rolls around.
Posted 1 May 2015: (A note from Lucinda Sander): When the article appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer on April 23, Ken Kay received an interesting call from 91 year old Jackie Schnitker, a 1941 graduate of WHHS, and the former president of KYTYVES sorority. . Since Ken's name was listed in the article, she was able to find his number in the phone book. Jackie was not happy that her sorority was not mentioned in the article. Her husband,Glenn Schnitker, was a member of TO. Many of you know and have loved Glenn Schnitker,... aka/Glenn Ryle or "Skipper" Ryle.. Ken shared her phone number with me, and I had the pleasure of speaking with this sweet woman, to apologize for the omission in the article I wrote. It was wonderful to talk to her. She has a scrapbook and photographs of various fraternity/sorority events that we would all enjoy seeing. I thanked her for the opportunity to speak and encouraged her attend the picnic. I even offered to drive her to the picnic, and take her home whenever she wished to leave. I sincerely hope we have the pleasure of meeting her in the very near future. She asked for my address, and may send "something" to me. I hope it's her picture!

Calling All Former West High Sorority and Fraternity Members
The bygone-era of annual rush parties, pledging, secret rituals, ceremonies and hell nights that once existed at Western Hills High School, from 1928 until 1979, remains only in the memories of former sorority and fraternity members. But now, a group of West High alumni are working hard to locate all former sorority and fraternity members, to cordially invite them to reunite and reminisce at an upcoming Fraternity-Sorority Family and Friends picnic.
The picnic will take place, rain or shine, on Sunday, May 17, 2015, from Noon-6:00 p.m., at Fernbank Park’s Riverview Shelter House, 50 Thornton Ave. (off Route 50), in Sayler Park. BYO drinks (alcohol permitted) and picnic-type food. Grills and charcoal provided. Corn hole, horseshoes and games for the children are available to enjoy. (Note to those unable to attend: It’s an annual event, always held the Sunday after Mother’s Day at Fernbank Park – so mark your calendars in advance).
“If you belonged, you’re invited,” said event coordinator Ken Kay, a 1961 West High graduate and member of Triginta Optimi fraternity. “Last year was terrific! Over 100 members from the 1940s through the 1970s attended, representing the fraternities of Triginta Optimi, Chi Omega Sigma, Phi Delta Sigma, and Tri-Chi; and, the sororities of Tau Sigma Chi, Pi Delta Phi, Sub Deb, and Theta Alpha Pi. This year, we hope to double the attendance by reaching out to invite every former sorority and fraternity member, and their family and friends. Reconnecting and reminiscing is a guaranteed good time,” he added.
Alumni of Triginta Optimi fraternity began this annual event three years ago. Chi Omega Sigma alumni joined in the sponsorshipand a committee, representing many of the organizations, formed to jointly locate members and to plan the festivities.

Posted 23 March 2015 (at the request of Frater Bob Montag, Chapter II):
Subject: Heart & Vascular Screening
I wanted to pass along a little information to you, with the hope that you can email this information to all of our Brother's (Sister's family & friends) in the Greater Cinti Area. Personally over the last few years I have had a brain scan, xrays of the lungs & heart, regular checkups and annual ekg's. The results were very good. At the present time and thru all of 2015 Christ Hospital and their outpatient centers are offering a $29 Heart & Vascular Screening which takes about 30 minutes. It consists of a mini ekg, they take your blood pressure & pulse in both legs and compare it to your arm blood pressure & pulse, looking for possible blockages. Then they do an abdominal aorta ultrasound looking for aneurysms. Next they do an ultra sound on both of your Carotid Arteries in your neck. Turns out I have a 90-95% blockage on one side and small blockage on the other side, the tech and the Doctor said it was highly unusual to see someone walking and talking with no symptoms with this kind of blockage. I am a stroke just waiting to happen.
Probably the best $29 and 30 minutes I have spent since high school (lol). Fortunately we caught it and it is a very simple surgery to remove the blockage. I will be scheduled for surgery soon. Hopefully, you will be so kind as to email this message to everyone and ask them to spread the word to family & friends. I had my screening done at the Christ Hospital Outpatient Center on Harrison Pike in Green Township. I understand that they do these screenings at the Christ Hospital and their Outpatient Centers thru 2015. To schedule a screening call 513-585-2668 or online at: The ChristHospital.com/HeartScreening.
Make an appointment $29 and 30 minutes of your time, maybe add another 50yrs or so to your life. Don't be a walking stroke or heart attack waiting to happen.
Fraternally, Bob Montag "74"
God Bless You All!!Hope to see everyone at the picnic this as we celebrate TO 125 [120] years!
Posted 22 March 2015: Another T.O. that was somehow omitted from the T.O. Records has been identified. The T.O. was Edwin Hughes Vandegriff, Chapter I, Class of 1943 and verified by his Brother John Vandegriff, Chapter I, Class of 1947. Of historical note, Edwin was serving onboard the SS Theodore Dwight Weld as a Merchant Marine and in 1943, the ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat and Edwin was listed as MIA. Posted 5 February 2015: Bob Link, Chapter II, Class of 1960 Retired from the US Navy Reserve as Captain. Served on active duty in nuclear submarine force from 1966-1971, and reserve duty from 1971-1993.
Posted 5 February 2015: Exciting News! We were recently contacted by Frater Bart Varelmann, Chapter I, Class of 1947 and here is what he had to say:
"I was a TO from 1943 - 47 Hughes High. I checked your website and found no mention of the founders, Henley, Bender, Schlemmer and Underhill. Also, no words to the TO song which began: "Triginta Optimi, Grand Old Fraternity. May all thy brothers be, true to thy loyalty. And in the Years to Come, Praise all that thou hast done.." (That's all I remember which, considering the wording, is probably more than anyone needs to hear!) After Hughes, I went to UC for three years, was an air force pilot for five during the Korean war, and graduated from U of Miami (Florida) on the GI bil. Then 43 years on the Pacific coast of Mexico where I built a small hotel, sold it, wrote a book ("The Innkeeper") and finally built a home near Tampa with my third (and best) wife, Inga. In case anyone is curious to see what became of an old (but
viable) TO, google my name or check my website www.manzanillo-innkeeper.com" (See Bart's Senior Picture here.)

Posted 16 September 2014: We were contacted via the T.O. Web Site Contact Form by a Jim Madsen (picture attached), Class of 1965, Cooley High School, Detroit Michigan, and below is what he said.
"From 1962 to 1965 I was a member of Triginta Optimi (Thirty of the Best) at Cooley High School in Detroit, Michigan. Our insignia, a "T" with an "O" in the middle is almost exactly the same as yours. We had a circular 3 pointed pin with the same TO insignia in the middle. We would also use the TO letters when signing graduation pictures or other correspondences, exactly like the one I saw on your web page.
I never found out exactly who started our fraternity or where it originated but the similarities between what I read on your web page, and, our organization are beyond coincidence. I know that none of our guys ever mentioned other chapters but someone got the idea from somewhere. I do remember, however, that one of our members said the founder got the idea from "out of town". At our peak we had about 20-25 members, however, we disbanded in 1966 or 1967. If you have the history, or other details, please e-mail them to me, I would enjoy reading it and corresponding with you.
Why I Googled Triginta Optimi after all these years is beyond me, but I am glad I did. I sincerely hope your experience was as good, rewarding and fun as mine.
Yours in TO,
Jim Madsen"
Posted 11 September 2014: Note to Ken Kay from Eric Van Hoose (Class of 1965) on Steve Vogel (Class of 1964);
- "I had dinner with Vogs last night. He’s doing great. Stronger than ever and fighting very successfully to stay ahead of the cancer. He truly regretted missing the TO reunion and especially since there were some of the older guys there that we looked up to as younger TO’s. He is still working and loves it…but it took him out of town for the reunion. He wanted to thank everyone for the continued prayers and promised to make the fall reunion too.

Posted 1 May 2015 (A note from Lucinda Sander): Keeping my fingers crossed.
Posted 1 May 2015) (A note from Lucinda Sander): When the article appeared in the Cincinnati Enquirer on April 23, Ken Kay received an interesting call from 91 year old Jackie Schnitker, a 1941 graduate of WHHS, and the former president of KYTYVES sorority.

Records. Who might that be you ask? John H. Vandegriff, Chapter I, Class of 1947, and we hope to see him at one of the upcoming T.O. Events.

Yours in TO,
Jim Madsen"
Posted 11 September 2014: Note to Ken Kay from Eric Van Hoose (Class of 1965) on Steve Vogel (Class of 1964);
- "I had dinner with Vogs last night.
